An Investigation of Language Teachers’ Explorations of the Use of Corpus Tools in the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Class

Despite claims that the use of corpus tools can have a major impact in language classrooms (e.g., Conrad, 2000, 2004; Davies, 2004; O\u27Keefe, McCarthy, & Carter, 2007; Sinclair, 2004b; Tsui, 2004), many language teachers express apparent apathy or even resistance towards adding corpus tools to their repertoire (Cortes, 2013b). This study examines from a teacher cognition perspective (Borg, 2006) how three EAP (English for Academic Purposes) writing teachers identified their most pressing needs and considered possible ways that corpus tools might address those needs. After having an individualized corpus working session, each teacher put into practice one or more corpus tools to address self-identified needs in their writing classes. The teachers reflected on the process across a series of interviews and in a stimulated recall session, which were analyzed using qualitative research methods. Each teacher discussed the degree to which the lesson met her objectives, and considered how she might use such corpus tools in the future, as one component in the development of her teaching beliefs, knowledge base, and practices. Through thematic analysis of the interviews and the individualized corpus working sessions, themes emerged that tell the story of these three teachers as they moved through this process, relating to the issues of time, student engagement, material analysis, selection and design, issues related to corpus tools, language, institutional factors, and collaboration. A new area of specialization on the pedagogical uses of corpus tools is discussed, based on the results of the three cases. Implications for researchers, material designers, corpus tools specialists, teacher educators, administrators and teachers are considered

Studying abroad is something I had looked forward to for a long time. Though I had never travel abroad, I had done a lot of domestic traveling in The States. I love walking around the city; I love nature and exploring outdoors; I love learning about other cultures and what it\u27s like to live in other parts of the world (or even other states and cities within the U.S.); I study world maps for fun and Google places I want to discover more about. The idea of living in another part of the world intrigued me, to say the least

    Mass Incarceration

This paper takes a brief look into Mass Incarceration: a phenomenon in the United States that accounts for the imprisonment of 2.3 million people (25% of the world\u27s imprisoned population). It includes the synthetization of ideas by notable scholars within the realm of social justice studies, such as Bryan Stevenson and Ibram X. Kendi, in order to display how mass incarceration discriminates against minorities, upholds systemic injustice, and has effects on individuals who are incarcerated, as well as their families and the communities they live in. In order to set the context, this paper also mentions the boom of incarceration in the 1970s and the importance of rhetoric and policy in its continuation. To conclude, it mentions the framework in which mass incarceration should be viewed in order to address the issue effectively and in a redemptive manner

The Role of Women in Traditional Scottish Song

    Get PDF
Music is a looking-glass into cultural contexts. While timeless, genres of song are like time capsules swirling with people’s thoughts and emotions of far off times and places, and when studied, these emotions are reflected back to the listener. Furthermore, song, and the lyrics they claim, provide insight into the norms of language and how the way of expressing thoughts of the world has changed over time. It can also provide insight into specific issues, such as gender and gender norms, and how they have progressed. Looking through the lens of gender, this essay briefly discusses the historical role of women in Scottish traditional song, the actions they took to make a space for themselves within the tradition, how they found empowerment through these actions, and ways that these issues are still relevant in modern contexts of traditional song. Through these points, it also aims to explain why it is important to look at Scots song within this perspective: looking at contexts through different lenses can lead to new, and deeper interpretations

Representing Italy: Midwest Model United Nations 2020

The United Nations is an integral actor in international relations, as well as in politics more generally. As the world becomes ever more interconnected, intergovernmental organizations play an important role in shaping the lives of nations across the globe. Through much research of the treaties and resolutions that are passed by the UN, it has been realized that a member states domestic policy is not only framed under UN agreements (with significant flexibility in implementation), but much policy is being created to reflect values in international law. With this, the work done by the UN, and how these frameworks are implemented by specific member-states, affects the lives of people greatly, making it an intriguing process to reflect upon

Gab Adapter Proteins as Therapeutic Targets for Hematologic Disease

    Get PDF
The Grb-2 associated binder (Gab) family of scaffolding/adaptor/docking proteins is a group of three molecules with significant roles in cytokine receptor signaling. Gabs possess structural motifs for phosphorylation-dependent receptor recruitment, Grb2 binding, and activation of downstream signaling pathways through p85 and SHP-2. In addition, Gabs participate in hematopoiesis and regulation of immune response which can be aberrantly activated in cancer and inflammation. The multifunctionality of Gab adapters might suggest that they would be too difficult to consider as candidates for “targeted” therapy. However, the one drug/one target approach is giving way to the concept of one drug/multiple target approach since few cancers are addicted to a single signaling molecule for survival and combination drug therapies can be problematic. In this paper, we cover recent findings on Gab multi-functionality, binding partners, and their role in hematological malignancy and examine the concept of Gab-targeted therapy
